What is vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a natural mineral that expands into lightweight, accordion-like flakes when heated. It’s prized in gardening for its ability to retain moisture and improve aeration in soil mixes—making it a favorite for seed starting and container plants.
How it's made?
Mined from mica-rich rocks, vermiculite is heated to around 900°C, causing it to expand up to 30 times its original size. This process creates tiny pockets that trap water and air, giving plants the perfect balance of moisture and oxygen.
Compared to perlite, vermiculite holds much more water but is still lightweight. It’s ideal for plants needing consistent moisture without waterlogging.
Where it comes from?
Vermiculite is mined in countries such as the United States, South Africa, China, and Brazil. It’s widely available and a natural, eco-friendly growing medium.
How it's used?
Perfect for seed starting, cuttings, soil mixes, and potting plants that prefer steady moisture, like ferns and begonias. It also helps improve soil aeration and nutrient retention.
Fun fact!
Vermiculite was once used as loose-fill insulation in homes—but its gardening superpowers make it much more popular in the plant world today!
