What is rice husk?

Rice husk is the protective outer shell of rice grains, often discarded after milling. In gardening, it’s a lightweight, natural byproduct that works as an eco-friendly soil amendment—especially for improving aeration and reducing soil compaction.

How it's made?

Collected during rice milling, rice husks are cleaned and sometimes partially decomposed or fermented before use in growing mediums. They are high in silica and decompose slowly, making them a good temporary structure enhancer in soil mixes.

Compared to burnt rice husk, raw rice husk retains more of its natural structure and breaks down faster, but still helps create a light and breathable mix.

Where it comes from?

Rice husks are widely available in Malaysia, as well as other rice-growing countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia—making it a sustainable, local choice for growers.

How it's used?

Commonly used in seed-starting mixes, composting, and as a soil lightener for potted plants. It helps keep roots oxygenated and soil fluffy.

Fun fact!

Rice husk is naturally resistant to pests and fungi, adding lightness without bringing unwanted guests into your soil!
