What is red lava rock?

Red lava rock is a porous volcanic stone known for its rustic, earthy color and rugged texture. It's used for improving soil structure and as a striking decorative layer on potted plants or garden beds.

How it's made?

Red lava rock is formed when iron-rich lava cools and oxidizes, giving it its characteristic deep red color. Like black lava rock, it’s porous and lightweight—but it’s generally more brittle and breaks down faster in soil mixes.

The key difference? Red lava is higher in iron, giving it a warmer tone, while black lava is denser, darker, and more durable.

Where it comes from?

Commonly sourced from volcanic regions like Indonesia, the Philippines, and parts of the U.S., red lava rock is widely used in tropical landscaping and indoor gardening.

How it's used?

Used in cactus/succulent soil mixes, bonsai, and top dressing. Its warm hue adds color contrast to green plants while enhancing drainage.

Fun fact!

Red lava rock isn’t just pretty—it reflects light and heat slightly more than black lava, which can help warm soil in cooler spaces.
