What is pumice?

Pumice is a naturally occurring volcanic rock formed when lava cools rapidly and traps gas bubbles inside—creating a light, porous, stone-like material. In the plant world, pumice is prized for its ability to improve drainage and prevent overwatering.

How it's made?

Pumice is created during explosive volcanic eruptions, when high-pressure lava cools so quickly it traps gas bubbles—forming a rock that's full of tiny air pockets. It's then mined, cleaned, and crushed into different sizes for gardening.

Unlike lava rock, which is denser and heavier with fewer pores, pumice is much lighter and more absorbent. Both come from volcanic activity, but pumice is softer and better at holding moisture—making it gentler on delicate roots and easier to mix into potting soil.

Where it comes from?

Pumice is mined in volcanic regions like Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, Greece, and the United States. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia is a well-known source due to its active volcanoes.

How it's used?

Used in succulent and cactus mixes, bonsai planting, and hydroponics, pumice boosts drainage, prevents rot, and improves root health—without compacting the soil.
