What is perlite?
Perlite is a lightweight, white, popcorn-like mineral that's widely used in gardening for its ability to improve aeration and drainage. It’s actually a form of volcanic glass—super airy, super effective, and surprisingly natural!
How it's made?
Perlite is mined from volcanic rock, then heated to around 800–900°C. At this temperature, the moisture trapped inside the rock expands, causing it to "pop" like popcorn—creating those fluffy white bits you see in potting mixes.
Unlike pumice, which is denser and more rock-like, perlite is ultra-light and holds less water. It’s ideal when you need a chunky texture and fast-draining medium, especially for moisture-sensitive plants.
Where it comes from?
Perlite is mined in countries like Turkey, the United States, Greece, and Japan. It’s widely available and eco-friendly, since it requires no chemical processing.
How it's used?
Perfect for seed starting, succulent mixes, hydroponics, and loosening compact soils. It boosts drainage, prevents root rot, and keeps your plant babies breathing easy.
Fun fact!
Despite its appearance, perlite is sterile and pH neutral—which means no pests, no fungi, and no surprises in your soil!
