What is peat moss?

Peat moss is a natural, soil-like material harvested from peat bogs. Formed over thousands of years from decomposed mosses (mainly sphagnum), it’s a favorite in gardening for its rich texture, water-holding ability, and slightly acidic pH—perfect for acid-loving plants.

How it's made?

Peat moss is slowly formed in cool, wet environments like bogs and wetlands, where sphagnum moss and other organic matter break down over centuries. It’s carefully harvested, sun-dried, and screened before being packaged for horticultural use.

Where it comes from?

Peat moss is primarily sourced from Canada, northern Europe, and parts of Russia, where large peatlands exist. Canada is one of the world’s largest and most responsible exporters.

How it's used?

Gardeners love peat moss for seed starting, improving soil texture, and growing plants that need acidic conditions—like blueberries, ferns, or azaleas. It holds moisture well while improving aeration in potting mixes.

Fun fact!

Although peat moss is highly effective, it’s considered non-renewable in the short term—taking centuries to form. That's why many growers are now blending it with sustainable alternatives like coco peat!
