What is charcoal?

Horticultural charcoal is a natural soil amendment made from organic material that’s been burned in low-oxygen conditions. It’s a popular addition in plant mixes for its ability to filter impurities, enhance drainage, and keep roots healthy.

How it's made?

Charcoal used in gardening is typically made by slowly burning wood or coconut shells without oxygen, creating a porous, carbon-rich material. This process locks in nutrients and creates surfaces that absorb toxins and odors.

Compared to burnt rice husk, charcoal is denser, more absorbent, and decomposes even more slowly. It’s excellent for long-term moisture control and doesn’t compact over time.

Where it comes from?

Often sourced from sustainably managed woodlands or agricultural waste in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Locally produced charcoal is both eco-conscious and highly effective.

How it's used?

Perfect for aroid, orchid, and terrarium soil mixes. Charcoal helps prevent root rot, balances pH, and filters harmful substances—keeping soil fresh and breathable.

Fun fact!

Charcoal can trap chemicals and smells in the soil—making it nature’s own purifier! Plus, it’s a favorite among orchid growers worldwide.
