What is burnt rice husk?

Burnt rice husk, also known as carbonized rice hull (CRH), is a blackened, partially combusted version of raw rice husk used in soil mixes to improve drainage, pH balance, and microbial activity.

How it's made?

Rice husks are burned under controlled conditions, allowing them to carbonize without turning to ash. The result? A lightweight, porous, charcoal-like material that’s high in silica and carbon.

Compared to raw rice husk, burnt rice husk is more stable, has a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and improves long-term soil texture without breaking down quickly.

Where it comes from?

Burnt rice husk is commonly produced in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, where rice farming and sustainable waste reuse are both widespread.

How it's used?

Ideal for tropical plant mixes, hydroponics, seedling trays, and composting. It improves drainage, neutralizes acidity, and supports beneficial soil microbes.

Fun fact!

Burnt rice husk can absorb toxins and heavy metals from soil—acting like a natural purifier while keeping roots healthy and happy.
